Uploading Your Picture and Personalising Your Profile on Moodle

Modified on Tue, 6 Sep, 2022 at 12:19 PM

You can create a biography and upload a picture of yourself that other students and tutors can see. This helps you create a presence on Moodle.

To access your profile, click on the avatar icon which is located at the top right of any page on Moodle (see fig 1.).  This will reveal a drop-down menu.

fig 1. Access dropdown menu and select profile

Once your Profile page has loaded, to the left there is a box called 'User Details' (see fig 2. below). In the upper left of this text box, there is a pink link that states 'Edit Profile'.  This is circled orange on the image (left) to help you identify it.

This link navigates you to the Edit profile page, where you can personalise and update your details.

By scrolling down the Edit profile page, you will encounter a text field labelled 'Description'.

If you write something about yourself here it will appear at the top of your profile page for others to see.  You are free to write what you wish, though most users opt for some information about their professional life as well as an outline of their personal interests.

Underneath the description section is the 'User Picture' facility (fig 4. below).  Here, you can upload an image of yourself to act as your Moodle avatar (using Gravatar).  Your avatar will appear next to your name whenever you participate on Moodle.  Other users can click on your avatar to visit your profile page.

To upload your picture, locate the desired file from your computer and drag it into the upload files box as shown below (fig 4.).  Please be aware that only certain types of files will be accepted.

File types accepted are

  1. .gif
  2. .jpeg
  3. .jpg
  4. .jpe
  5. .png

At the bottom of the page, there is a blue button with the text 'update profile'.  Click on this and any changes will be saved.  Your picture will appear next to your name and your description will appear just below (see fig 5).
